Dialysis Solution, also known as Dialysate, is a mixture of clean water, electrolytes, and salts such as sodium & bicarbonate. Dialysate is used to draw toxins from the bloodstream into the dialysate. This is accomplished by a mechanism known as diffusion. The waste concentration in the blood of hemodialysis patients is high, but the waste concentration in the dialysate is low. Because of the concentration difference, the waste will pass through the semipermeable membrane in an equal amount on both sides. The dialysis solution, together with the waste, is subsequently flushed down the sink.
